International youth football tournament in Mannheim, Germany: Bergstrassen Pokal
Participating countries:
Czech Republic France Germany Netherlands Switzerland

Are you a lover of historic towns and castles? Then Weinheim and Viernheim are the perfect places for you. Both towns boast idyllic locations just north of famous Heidelberg. Weinheim is on the 'Bergstrasse', a famous tourist route along the vineyards. Hard-core enthusiasts will know that Sepp Herberger, famous coach of the German national side, lived here. However, for all football fans there is another special reason to visit the town: the Bergstraßen Pokal. For the inaugural tournament in 2019, almost 80 teams from five countries signed up for an extensive competition involving six matches over one weekend. Of course, that doesn't leave much time to visit a castle, but if you want to, you definitely can.

Bergstraßen Pokal is organised by TSG Weinheim and TSV Amicitia Viernheim in collaboration with the regional football association and the support of both municipalities. TSG Weinheim was established in 1862 and has no fewer than 7,000 members, who actively participate in various types of sports. The football department has 800 members. TSV Amicitia Viernheim has 2,500 members, who actively participate in various types of sports. The youth football department has 18 boys’ and seven girls’ teams.

Sport facillity

The Bergstraßen Pokal takes place in Viernheim and nearby Weinheim. The TSG Weinheim sports park has three fields and a main stadium named after Sepp Herberger. As team coach, Sepp Herberger led the German national team to the first world title in the 1950s. TSV Amicitia Viernheim’s Waldstadion is romantically situated on the edge of the forest and has three fields, one of which has an impressive grandstand. There’s a swimming pool with slides next to the park and a recreational lake a little further away.

Viernheim & Weinheim

The Bergstraßen Pokal is a joint project of the football clubs based in Viernheim (34,000 inhabitants) and Weinheim (45,000 inhabitants). The two towns lie at the foot of the popular Odenwald forest, 15 minutes' drive from Mannheim and Heidelberg. Thanks to the historic city of Heidelberg and the natural beauty of the Odenwald forest, the region is a popular destination. In addition, besides a historic centre, Mannheim also offers vibrant city life with a large shopping centre, and more. And since you're in the area: the picturesque 'Marktplatz' in Weinheim is a must-see.

Heidelberg

Fifteen minutes' drive from Viernheim und Weinheim is the medieval university town of Heidelberg. Visit the historic centre with its intimate market square and small shopping streets. And don't miss out on the view from the 13th century Heidelberg castle, the 1th century Old Bridge and the student prison, which dates back to the 16th century.
